LA1. Understanding the purpose of diegetic and non-diegetic sound
Diegetic Sound:
Is a noise, or sound effect that has source and a purpose of screen. They are sounds which not have been edited in, for example diolauge between characters or footsteps of somebody walking.
There are others of which are listed bellow:
Footsteps, creaky doors/handles, (sounds of moving objects) e.g like pots or pans etc.
This common sound is what is used mostly in horror to create the effect of suspense and tension. Also it is a natural surrounding effect as when doors open they do make physical noises in which in real-life, the characters in the story will hear.
Non-Diegetic sound:
Is a sound which does not have a source on screen at all. They have been added and edited in e.g like soundtracks are non-degitic the characters in the story can't really hear it, but we the audience can hear it. Its added in for dramatic effect e.g hero doing inspirational speech with dynamic sounds in the background.
Example:
This sound is effective as the music played over it is quite happy, up-beat. Which is a complete contrast to the scene as the scene itself, you won't assiocte it with the scenes in which are layers out. It adds a comedic effect to the scene as the content is unconditionally funny and and amusing.
